The only place I've needed a mute so far is in quintet literature. I got an NP Griffith mute. DON'T BUY ONE OF THESE MUTES!!!!!!!! They are made of shotty material and sound like play playing into an aluminum soda can. I spent the extra $ and ordered a higher quality mute. It hasn't been shipped to me yet so I can't tell you about it.

In answer to your question, I don't think you should get one until you know you need it. Unless you do a lot of quintet or orchestra work, you probably won't have to have it. Even then it won't take that long to get it IF you know in advance. However, if you have an xtra couple of hundred bucks sitting around, go for it! There are very few that sound decent(Dennis Wick), but you may find one.

Good Luck,
Jason
