It is if you're interested in playing pieces that require a mute. Don Quixote has a big muted part, so does Mahler 9. Many band pieces ask for a mute as well.
I have a wooden mute that I really like the sound of - it really changes the tone colour.
I have no idea who made it, since I bought it used.
