There have been many discussions of this topic in the past. Search the archives to access them. My personal opinion is that I prefer gig bags for their ease of use. There have been many posts in the past that refer to gig bags as "a repairman's best friend". And it is true that a gig bag doesn't offer the same level of protection as a hard case. But I don't make a habit of wantonly slinging my tubas around in the gig bag so I almost never have any problems. Something that Lew Waldeck said to me once really stuck with me. He asked me if I had any shoulder pain or stiffness. I said no. He said "don't worry, you will". I suppose after 30+ years of carrying around tubas, anybody might suffer debilitating injury to their body, kind of like large scale repetitive stress syndrome. I would prefer to avoid that! Food for thought...
