I have found that it is much easier to gain acceptance playing tuba on the bass "chair" if you amplify yourself. The amplification (clip-on bell mic thru bass amp or PA, in my case) is not to create masses of volume, but to allow yourself to cruise as you play (generally) constant and continuous walking lines.

In a loudish band, struggling to constantly snatch breaths and "beef it out" makes it much more difficult to emulate the bass sound/style/attack/sustain to gain acceptance in this role.

So, do whatever it takes electronically, technically (and above all MUSICALLY) to **disprove** most people's (including most other musicians') perception that tuba in the swing string bass chair doesn't work.
