You can certainly play the notes. If you have a writen out bass part, you will have to play the notes down an octave in order to match the pitches precisely. If you play off of "changes" then you can do whatever. I would question whether the "sound" is what you are looking for. You can play a tuba like a string bass (I have to do it all the time on bass cues in pop transcriptions) but it still isn't the same. Good luck!
