I've been using a Monette 97 for a couple months on my Mirafone 184
(I bought the one Scott Mendoker sold on this list). Overall, I am
very pleased with it. I have found it to be very quick-responding
and articulate. Response in the low register is especially good, at
least for me and this horn. I think the large throat helps here. It
definitely has a feel different from any other mouthpiece I have
used. In the high register, you have to really relax and keep the
air moving and the pitch centers well. If you tighten up or try to
"muscle" the pitch around it goes flat in a big hurry. In fact, in
all phases of playingwith this mouthpiece, the more you try to force anything the worse you will sound. It took my a while to adjust to "backing off to sound bigger", but now I find it very comfortable. My only quibble might be with the rim. It's pretty flat- a lot like the Wick rims. If you check out the Monette web site you will see that David Monette is trying to promote a particular style of playing. It's probably not for everyone but, if what you see on the web site makes sense to you, you will most likely appreciate his mouthpieces. I'm impressed that, at least for me, his products seem to act like he says they are supposed to.
