My _taste_ runs toward G contrabass bugles, but you certainly can't easily use them in regular ensembles. Given the choice between BBb and CC, I tend to lean to BBb when presented with two horns of the same brand with very similar designs. I went shopping for a tuba last year, and it didn't matter to me what key it was going to be in, and I still ended up with a good BBb. But that's only my opinion, and not everybody's.
I'm wondering if the professor's preference really should carry that much weight in a purchase decision. Shouldn't the musical result be of primary importance?
