I finally found there reference to false tones in Song and Wind. It's on page 164. It seems to indicate that this is something Arnold Jacobs did use primarily later in his career and they do take less air. However, oddly enough, the passage also suggests that false tones are louder than a standard tone.
Perhaps I should spend more time in the practice room figuring these things out for myself.
