I don't think it's meant to be THAT negative, but each of us has a prefered sound that we like best. For instance, I may have a particular sound quality in mind that I deem to MYSELF as being the best. When I hear someone else play my same instrument, I compare their sound to my ideal. You can't help it, it just happens. However, I could listen to a trumpet player (which I am not) and determine if his/her sound is bright or dark, etc. but not have an ideal associated with it, therefore only observing what comes out, not comparing it to something that I listen to everyday. I think that's what Sean meant.
