It failed!
It is probably the worst Eb tuba I have ever played!!
The 981 is, in my opinion the best Eb tuba around (including the 983 with it's smaller lead pipe).
And Jay - I use a Wick 2L mp and I've *never* had any complaints regarding sounding like a 'toy euphonium'!
BTW just this week I've taken delivery of the prototype of the *new* Wick 2L mp.
It is considerably heavier - more mass 'round the throat - in fact the throat is slightly more open.
I would advise all DW devotees to check this one out as soon as it goes into production.
