Curious,
Using mirrors or just looking in the tubing is the right way to align the piston valves of a tuba. Why use hard rubber that can get harder with time? Good old fashioned corks and felts will do the job and are cheap. A simple job, but since most people don't have a selection of corks and felts to choose from, splurge and let your local repairman use his mirrors to get the right combinatios for your horn. I havn't seen a set of factory tuba felts that were exactly right, yet. Bring along a couple of baggies and have him/her put an extra set of cap felts in 1 bag, and the fingerbutton felts in the other. Then you'd be set for a few years.
