Let's see if I can link to a MIDI file. The one below first plays a whole-note scale starting at second-space C and continuing to the C 9 ledgers below the staff as a recorder voice (the closest thing that I could find to a sine wave). It then repeats the scale as a violin.

Note that you can hear the violin (assuming that you've got a good MIDI synth) quite a way down because of its rich harmonic content. But the recorder gets softer and softer until all you hear is the faint sound of a stray harmonic. At least that's what happens on my synth.
