At my sons's school band is pretty cool. My observation is that they have more fun than just about anyone else and they get to do a lot of good things out of school. But, as others have mentioned, it's all about leadership. We're lucky to have a dedicated director and lots of supportive parents and I think that makes all the difference. Our director is crafty enough to invite the school administration to all events and to the end of the year band awards program. Hard to avoid supporting the music program when you see all those good kids with a lot of parental support at the banquet.
All that being said, it is hard (? how about impossible!) to get teenagers to do something they don't really want to do. All you can do is offer support to what they are interested in. It's a sad teen who isn't involved in *anything* at all.
