Band is alive and doing well in East Tennessee. One of the local high schools, Farragut, has around 200 kids in their high school program. Another, Bearden, is also a large band program. Granted, both of these schools are part of the Knox County school district, but their funding is much less than that of many, many smaller schools in smaller districts. In these schools, the band kids aren't "nerds" because they're in band. Some of the kids in the band are indeed nerds, but that holds true of any other aspect of the school. The kids in the Farragut band work their butts off. Their goals for any contest, marching or concert, are to walk out with a superior rating. Usually they do. Their band director has instilled a sense of doing things right, not just in band, but in life. The kids respect that and react to it. The bar is set very high, and they are consistently challenged to meet those expectations.

Around here, the halftime competitions are every bit as important to the participants as the game is to the players. Which band you played in is as much a source of pride as what team the athletes played for.
