I think the answer to that question depends alot on the school. Some schools have robust programs with a history of excellence that attracts a number of different parents. Other programs that are not as successful don't have the respect of their communities. Overall, I think it is harder to recruit for band today than it was in years past. Kids are bombarded by all sorts of images that glorify athletics. Other than the movie Drumline there hasn't been a whole of media hype geared towards giving band a positive image. In the thirties we had "pop" stars associated with Jazz and Swing music (Dorsey, Armstrong, Goodman-even Joe Tarto). I guess what we as "band" people need is a new popular music that features band instruments. Maybe we could get Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera to pick up the clarinet.
