The only reason we think that there was no musical schlock in times past is because it didn't endure. When Sinatra was performing his hip, complex stuff, there were dozens of doo-wop ensembles everywhere trying to copy each other.
It has always been true.
Of course, it's hard at the time to know what has the legs to endure, and sometimes the durable stuff gets forgotten by accident. That's what we have to avoid, but it happens only because we preserve it. Think of Vaughan Williams out in the field notating English folk song before the singers of it all passed on--and that was a hundred years ago.
