The light oil in the tuning slides runs the risk of dissolving a bit of grease and depositing it on the valves themselves, which will then thicken and make things gummy. If you squirt some down the leadpipe (enough to actually make it all the way to the valves), and roll the horn around so the oil gets into the valve body, it will coat them to some extent and minimize the calcium deposits that build up. It may also help keep dezincification of the leadpipe at bay. Unless there is a problem, you don't need more than that on the valve bodies. I prefer something heavier than typical valve oil on the bearings and linkage joints, such as any good, light machine oil. For loose bearings, I've even used motor oil on the bearings without slowing them down too much, and it helps keep them quiet (for a little while).
