I started my first brass instrument, horn, at 45. Tuba occured some years later at 52, same as you. I did have musical background, so only had to learn the physical aspects. That however, was sort of frustrating to know what it should sound like but not be able to do it.
I also advise getting a good (probably used, but good) instrument to start with. If you stay with it, you already have what you need, and if you don't, you can re-sell. I got a very inexpensive insrument to start with, but that was a lot because I really wanted an F tuba but was recalcitrant about the $3000 needed to get one. I did anyway, just a few months later, and I still have the little $400 Eb I started with.
