If you MUST occasionally use a mute for practicing, this looks to be the one to get.

Playing characteristics don't change so much that it's unusable, it will fit a variety of bell sizes, and it's very quiet to the outside. When I tried one out, a couple notes were knocked out of whack and were very difficult to center, but everything else mostly played OK. The electronics on my sample must have been a previous version as they seemed to distort easily. Of course, that may have been because I turned the volume up all the way to try to hear myself through the headphones over "through my head" -- that is, the sound coming through my skull was loud enough to compete with the headphones.

The mute by itself MIGHT make for a decent recording mic, but the sound box is too noisy to be included in serious recording. It would do fine if you want to record your practices so you can humble yourself later. ;-)
