My father picked up tuba after he retired and enjoyed playing (including some tuba ensemble gigs at a bar). I also have a friend that picked up electric bass in his 40's, enjoys music, is now very good. He plays bass weekly at his church and is called for some jobs.

Some advice (opinions)of mine to be offered to someone in your position.
My father liked playing, but when I gave him my E flat (York) he really enjoyed having
an excellent tuba that would not hold him back and was very easy to play. Get as
good of an instrument as possible, but make sure that it will be easy to control.
If possible, take some lessons with someone that knows what your goals are and that
will help you become a better musician.
Join a musical group when you are able. This could be a church ensemble, community
band, etc... Your playing and musicality will improve when you are in an ensemble
(and most likely your enjoyment).

The best of luck, I think that you will enjoy music.
