And yet, one of the best-sounding alto flutes is the one made by Yamaha from plain old lacquered gold-brass alloy. My wife has one and also the bass made the same way.

At least one maker maintains (and apparently can demonstrate) that it's the headjoint material that matters the most. He claims that the flute body could be made of silly putty and still sound okay if the headjoint were right.

I'm not entirely convinced by his claims, but he's got plenty of disciples. I wonder if a tuba could have PVC tuning slides and still not suffer if the remainder of the horn were made from customary materials.
