Then there re are the local music stores that get the bulk of their band instrument business by dealing with the local school district. Full MSRP on all purchased instruments, since the district has a policy of buying locally. Maybe two music stores in town and both know the other's prices.

With state budgets in the red, I expect that the "buy local" policy's going to get rewritten. Similarly, an enterprising out-of-state repair service could probably make a tidy profit by bidding for the annual summer repair work against the local stores, many of whom have techs that shouldn't be working on a rusty Chevette, much less a Buffet R13.

My wife can still remember the ugly muttering by local dealers when Woodwind&Brasswind sent a van full of merchandise and people to a local flute fair.
