Because those tubas don't have enough _______ for nearly all high-school tuba players and most adults, too.

______, as Joe will tell you, means resistance.

A Miraphone 186 has, by my thinking, a magical combination of resistance and open sound that makes it such an enduring favorite among non-professionals. I like my Holton better, but you can't buy them and most big tubas of more recent vintage don't have the same resistance or resonance. The Willson surely does not. The Gronitz, in Bb, is a completely unknown quantity, and would probably not be able to be produced quickly enough for a school purchase. And I don't care if money is really no object, no high-school kid ought to be playing a tuba that costs more than $10,000, especially at taxpayer expense, without having demonstrated an owner's sense of responsibility (i.e., by being the owner).
