We had a system in highschool, I haven't seen anyone else use it (being in college and not doing it I now realize what a pain it was to do).

Parade rest-right hand rests on bottom bow of 3rd valve tubing, with horn lowered so that upper arm is parallel to the ground.

parallel/attention-right hand in the same spot, but third valve tubing is parallel to the ground. going from parade rest to attention quickly is a real eye-catcher

horns up--snap horn from attention to playing position

horns down--opposite of horns up ;-)

it looks AWESOME when everyone does it, but the problem is a) it's high school, so if the section is bigger than 3 or maybe four, there'll be one guy who just can't get it. and b)it's just that much more work to do.

Some of the college section sites have pages that detail their parade moves (Michigan, maybe? been a while).

turn to march off (stolen from another school)--turn on four beats, lifting the sousaphone and rotating it to that it rests upside down on your left shoulder. be sure to remove your MP or push it in tight, though.

Slow and majestic (the previously mentioned rasing during 4 counts) or snappy and sharp are the two rules to follow when coming up with a move. Within that, creativity is a plus.

Hope that helps,

Doug
