Bill Bell advocated using jaw vibrato exclusively. I personally can make that method work only on certain notes in certain contexts. Other methods that I sometimes find useful are:
(1) Knee vibrato (based on the "hand vibrato" used my many trumpet players)
(2) Head vibrato -I just nod my head up and down a tiny bit while playing long tones; this works especially well on the helicon.
(3) Diaphragm vibrato: I think this is what Lee Stofer is referring to above; I can't do it but I have heard it done well by trained singers playing the tuba. Flutists use a similar technique.

As for when and how to use it, a lot can be learned by listening to singers. Decide what singers you really enjoy hearing and study how they use vibrato. You can't please everyone, so please yourself.
