Symphonic Variants for a freshman audition is very ambitious and depending upon your abilities, too much. In my opinion, and part of this does come from my experience as a freshman, don't jump into the harder literature right away. It is difficult to go wrong with the pieces on the audition list and there are also other pieces that would be good to learn before you move up to lit like Symphonic Variants.
