I have only had use of it for about 4-5 months. I am not much of a recording techi so I havn't done much with it other than my needs. I don't know if you can mix the channels. My guess is that if you set up the mics the way you describe, you would only get one channel. I would imagine you could find an adapter that would fit into a mini jack and terminate to 2 1/4 jacks. Maybe at Radio Shack. Also, the built in mic in the unit is surprisingly good quality. Really. For casual recording of practicing, there is no reason why that wouldn't work. One time I didn't feel like setting up the microphone when recording my band, so I just used the internal mic. I really couldn't hear a huge difference. The manual for both units is probably online if you go to the Marantz web site.
