I just came across an old (2000) posting asking about the tubist for the Victory at Sea recordings. There were actually two recordings of the original suite (Vol. 1) from the TV show. The one everybody knows was recorded in 1959 with the RCA Victor Symphony. I don't know who the tubist was. The other recording was made in 1953 with members of the NBC Symphony, the same orchestra that played the soundtrack for the TV show. At that time, the NBC tubist was Herb Jenkel, who succeeded Abe Torchinsky in 1949 and stayed until the orchestra was disbanded in 1954. I've always been interested in NBC Symphony personnel, but I haven't been able to find any other career details about Herb Jenkel. Can anybody enlighten me?
