I have never been a fan of the continental orchestras brass sections until very recently. It seems to me that the younger tubists were often the most capable players from Europe.

As an antedote, a friend of mine played in a 2nd level German orchestra, still highly regarded and often recorded. The strings tuned at A=444 or higher. All of the brass were pushed in all the way and still flat. These "evolved" musicians did nothing other than push in. How easy would it have been to have a repairman cut the tuning slide?

There are many outstanding individual musicians in European orchestras. My Personal Opinion - but overall, I regard European orchestra brass sections as uneven and painful to listen to.

I love the good orchestras in the UK. Several remarkable brass sections.

All this to say, I hope we see no evolution of the American brass sound to match the refined Europeans.

OK, I've hunkered down. Blast away.
