I have a couple of old recordings with Szell conducting the Ch.S.O...surely guest conducting. These l.p.'s are so old that they don't even have the raised ridge on the edge of the record (also very scratchy, these days). Of course, Reiner was the C.S.O. Maestro for many years. I have a few of those recordings (R. Strauss, etc.) and - same thing - I hear the tuba part, but not loud enough to comment on the timbre.

I never was able to hear Mr. Jacobs live with the Orchestra, and I'm not sure that some who are commenting on the timbre of his sound have much to comment on - unless they actually had an opportunity to hear Mr. Jacobs live with the C.S.O. rather than just on recordings - as is my limited experience. Again, I can only comment on his style (not timbre) from the misc. solos on far-away-mic'ed or fuzzy (London/Solti) recordings.
