Ugly!!!!! I prefer to think of it as having great character.
Last week I was looking on the web at some old Navy Band photos while trying to dig up some more information on my horn. I found some pictures (marching and standing) with some similar looking tubas (3 valve) and it struck me - yes, STANDING. The horn was designed for playing while standing. When sitting, the bell is REALLY close to your head and hard to see around, but standing, the bell is tipped and out of the way.
