I think with many folks, just picking up the horn and blowing a few notes is enough. Once you feel the sensations that accompany playing, you get into it. Everyone has doldrums. It's the stretches that last for a couple weeks that are the problems. Paul Lucas gave me some great advice: Take a week off man. No tuba, no buzzing, just LIVE. That was some of the BEST adviceI ever received. Then when you come back, you truly realize how much you enjoy making music on the tuba. Which actually, brings up two other points: WHY are you practicing?--Are you practicing for maintenance or for fun or to improve? And, WHAT are you practicing?--Maybe a good plan of attack would be to play some tunes you really enjoy, and then go and play your scales or etudes or whatever.

Of course, puting a stack of bills on the music stand usually helps too....he he he

For what it's worth,
