in my high school band we just got this new tuba player, he's around 5 feet tall, just this scrawny little freshman ( but he's an awesome player :) At our band camp he was just getting beat by lugging this, so we let him go one day without a bell. that worked pretty well, if you use it for about 6 hours a day like that for a week, you'll get used to it pretty soon. we also made a little pad made of foam and towels to help him out.
Just a funny note: there are three tubas in our marchnig band, i'm 6-1 or so and so is the other guy, so my private teacher has labled us the "flying V" cause that's what we look like. i know a girl who plays bassoon and marches sousa in her high school band as well, she's ok with it
maybe you'll just enjoy it so much that you'll want to switch over to tuba
