I would not get too worked up about the "green gunk". That stuff build up in horns which don't get played very frequently and have been sitting around for a while. Usually just a bathtub wash or two will get rid of it. If not, then you could pay a shop to chemically clean it.
Sounds more like a case of buyer's remorse than anything else. I do the same thing when I buy something expensive.
