No, they are not the same horn. The 5J has been around for years and is the last Conn designed 4 valve BBb tuba, even though I believe that all UMI tubas are now made in the former King factory. The Conn has a smaller bore (.658" vs. .687") and smaller bell (18" vs. 19") than the King. The Conn also has a faster taper from the bell resulting in a smaller bottom bow and remaining tubing. It's not quite a 3/4 sized tuba, but is definitely smaller and plays smaller than the King. I think that the 5J is a good tuba for advanced middle school or intermediate high school players. It is also a good all around BBb tuba for an amateur who wants a little bit smaller tuba than other 4/4s. I believe that they sell for about the same price as the King.
