Music education is far more respected than you may realize. Nearly every studio tuba player in Los Angeles has a credential, and was used to make a living before they could survive simply on playing alone. I'm going the same route, as I have just taken a position with a local school district with the understanding that when my career becomes sufficient, I will leave. I love teaching, but I would love to have a recording career more.
California was one of the hardest hit when arts teachers were cut back in the late 80's and 90's. Having said that, there are many jobs available now as funding has come back either from the state or by private institutions like "Save the Music."
