I love the Hartley Sonata! It was funny that you mentioned it in the same sentence as the music of Brahms, because I paired these pieces(the Sonata and Four Serious Songs) for my portion of a solo recital at ITEC. Before the flamethrowers fire up, I hardly ever use the words "Hartley" and "Brahms" in the same sentence!
I am also a big fan of trying to keep things real in a musical sense on the big tuba. If you haven't played a solo on the big horn for a while, this would be a nice choice. It's obvious that you've done a lot of thinking aboout the piece...go for it. If my CD grant proposal is approved by the school, the Hartley Sonata will be one of the pieces on the disc.
