I have a raw brass french horn, and I limit myself to polishing it once a year. Polishing does remove a layer of the metal, so in theory you can polish your tuba into oblivion. Howeer, the very best polish I've found is Maaz, which is a brass polish. It's a pink cream and does a nice job. It's either the same or similar to Simichrome, which is sold in motorcycle shops for polishing all that shiny stuff.
