I use anhydrous lanolin on my valve slides.
Sometimes, I pretend that it helps to pull the first slide.
To make the first slide move more easily, I simply add a few drops of valve oil (formerly All Cass, now Viper).
The lanolin and (this type of) valve oil mix easily and work well together.
I don't have any idea what the "proper porportions" are - I titrate until it feels right.
