You could have a machinest bore out the backbore of the mouthpiece. Eliminating this constriction greatly improves the low register of the tuba. Mr. Draper, whilst director of the Edgware Works of Boosey & Hawkes told me that the purpose of the backbore is to conserve air in the low register and does so by making the instrument stuffy. Doing this also makes the tone more mellow in all registers.
