I find that my 22J really is the tuba equivalent to my 20K. It plays very open and has a big, organ-like sound. I do agree that the equivalently sized Martins that I have tried have been better, but they are much harder to come by. I have never liked any of the big Holtons that I have tried. Also, there aren't that many 6/4 sized BBb tubas made today, so there just aren't that many alternatives for a BBb player.

I have to disagree about the Meinl-Weston model 20. I played one in High School that the band director bought for me to replace the 3 valve compensating Besson that I had been playing. I found it to be stuffy, unresponsive, and difficult to project with. The Besson was significantly better in every way.
