Some have claimed that a silver plated horn produces a brighter sound, while lacquer on the same horn deadens the sound. I have found the differences to be imperceptible. Lacquer is applied thicker than silver plate, and has a different resonance than brass, which, in theory, can dampen vibrations. Some people remove the lacquer from their horns for this reason. Since silver plate is relatively thin and you are adding metal to metal the horn should play more like a raw brass horn.

There have been some studies done on this, but primarily with trumpets. There was a link in an earlier post on this topic to a page giving the results on one such study done by Schilke.
