I have had my DS since about 1995. I do find myself adjusting intonation, but I never had to use alternate fingerings. If I did that, my head would probably explode from the amount of back pressure. Just the usual slide adjustments and the pitch was there.
Seriously though, it could be how consistent they were making the horns. I just got the horn back from some repair and found that the pistons were not even aligned properly. This improved the horn's response considerably, and we are talking microns here (OK, maybe 1/16"). Still on the stuffy side, though.
For what its worth, it is an OK all purpose horn. I've played it for a ton of stuff and it still is working. I don't play it as much since I have access to military horns, but I have taken it out to compare. The one thing keeping me from selling it is the intonation.
