You are correct that Gary is the principal of those two orchestras. He plays with the Symphony pops from time to time, but it was most likely the Esplanade orchestra your mother saw. For the record, the BSO does play during the summer in Tanglewood. They play three concerts a week for eight weeks... pretty intense! This summer has been particularly interesting for us tuba players, because since they don't have a principal tuba at the moment, they've been bringing different guys up all summer. Randy Montgomery played the first two weeks, then Steve Rosse (Sydney Symphony) was up for two weeks, Steve Campbell (New Mexico SO) is here now for two weeks, then Charles Villarubia will play one week and Mike Roylance (Chicago Civic) will play the last week. So, back to the original question, it was most likely NOT the BSO on TV, but probably the Esplanade Orchestra. I hope this helps.
