Some sorts of trombone slide grease would be bad for this purpose. If left alone over a period they tend to dry out and leave a hard crust, that will neither ensure tightness nor smoothness of the threading.
But at fat petrol jelly (?) would do a fine job as long as temperatures stay moderate.
