I bought my first Mirafone 186 in 1976. It cost $1750 and that included a hard shell case and a gig bag. I'm sure that other models and brands have seen similar appreciation over the years. But unless you start looking at the high end horns I think the price of tubas are pretty reasonable. If you want to spend $3-$5000 for a horn you have a lot of excellent choices in both new and used horns. I've never played on an $8-$10,000 horn but I'm sure that they have special qualities that makes it worth it for someone to spend that kind of money on one.
