For me, it was hearing Michael Sanders in an orchestra, and then hearing him in lessons (opposite of Sean's order). I will never achieve that sound, but I will always know what I'm not achieving.

Playing duets with a gentle and forgiving Lee Hipp.

Playing duets with an even more gentle and forgiving Ray Grim. He taught me a lot about golf, too. And about integrity.

Hearing Jay Rozen demonstrating that humor and seriousness of purpose are not mutually exclusive.

And studying advanced traffic flow theory with Robert Hermann, one of the great physicists of the 20th Century who turned his mind to my field of transportation. He was no tuba player, of course, but he taught me what it is like to shine a light into the unknown darkness. That lesson has helped with both tuba playing and with life.
