As other people have mentioned, it is worth giving Dillon's, Baltimore Brass Co., Woodwind and Brasswind, and BrookMays Tubastore a call. I personally live within a three hour drive of Dillon music and feel blessed. The people at all of these shops have a good reputation and will work hard to find a good horn for you. In addtion to that, because these guys are very reputable and do a TON of tuba business, the level of used horns that they get is usually a notch or two above par. My advice is to call these guys find out who has the best selection within your range, and if you can afford it, get a couple of plane tickets to the place of your choice and make a "bonding" experience out of it. Even better, if you have some folks or old friends near one of the places you can catch up on old times. Unfortunately, tuba shopping is difficult because there are only a few places out there with a large inventory of quality instruments. But, fortunately for you, your son does have his head on straight and his goals are very ascertainable.
