I can recall my director telling me not to do that the first year I played, and thankfully he told me why. The first (and most obvious reason) is that the bell is NOT a center of gravity for the instrument. It may not (and probably won't) balance, and the instrument will tip over (crash, rather) to its side, causing dings, and after a long amount of time, large dents. The second reason is that some moron who doesn't notice a big shiny object in their path migh step on the bell, crushing it. Hopefully this explanation helped out a bit.......
