I just go by feel. The hand's motor control is usually fine enough to get a slide within 1/4", which is certainly close enough. Besides, trombone players don't have much in the way of stops.
And, not having a stop helps avoid any more mechanical noises than necessary -- although a rubber bumper of some sort would largely negate that problem.
